John Holmwood

Prof. John Holmwood, Dept of Sociology, University of Birmingham.

John was an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, where he studied Economics and Social and Political Sciences. He was a postgraduate at the University of California, Los Angeles before returning to Cambridge to study for a PhD in Sociology. His first job was at the University of Tasmania before taking up a position at the University of Edinburgh. He has held professorships at the University of Edinburgh and at the University of Sussex, where he was also Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies before coming to Birmingham in October 2005.

John's main research interests are the relation between social theory and explanation and social stratification and inequality. His current research addresses the challenge of global social inquiry and the role of pragmatism in the construction of public sociology. He is the author of Social Theory and Explanation (with A. Stewart) and Founding Sociology? Talcott Parsons and the Idea of General Theory as well as other edited books and articles.

John is keen to supervise research students on the following areas: social theory, the philosophy of the social sciences, inequality, and the sociology of markets.

Mattias Iser

Mattias Iser, * 1971 Berlin, studierte Politikwissenschaft (Diplom) und Philosophie (M.A., ab Okt. 1992) an der Freien Universität Berlin, der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt/M. und der University of Chicago.

Von 1999 - 31.3.2005 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für politische Theorie und politische Philosophie am Otto-Suhr-Institut für Politikwissenschaft an der FU Berlin. Oktober 2003 Lehrtätigkeit an der Higher School of Economics Moskau (Russische Föderation).

Seit 1.4.2005 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für politische Theorie am Fachbereich Gesellschaftswissenschaften der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt / Main. Von August - Dezember 2005 (Fall Term) war Mattias Iser Theodor Heuss-Lecturer for Political Science an der New School for Social Research in New York (USA).

Der Zusammenhang von Empörung und Fortschritt steht im Zentrum der kritischen Theorien von Jürgen Habermas und Axel Honneth. Beide eint das Projekt, universelle moralische Erwartungen aufzudecken, um eine umfassende Kritik der Gesellschaft zu begründen. Aber zeigt Empörung stets moralisches Unrecht an? Und lassen sich hieraus Kriterien moralischen Fortschritts gewinnen? Mattias Iser arbeitet die Vor - und Nachteile der neueren Kritischen Theorie gegenüber konkurrierenden Ansätzen heraus.

Zudem legt er den ersten umfassenden Vergleich der Theorien von Habermas und Honneth vor sowie eine Vermittlung ihrer Paradigmen – Verständigung und Anerkennung.
